FIRM TONE AT WESTFIELD
AUCKLAND. This Day. There was steadier competition with a generally firmer tone at the Westfield tat stock market yesterday. Apart from calves, most lines showed good values. In the beef section there was much lack of quality. However, prices were well maintained, the heaviest prime steer making £l3 10/. In. the sheep section, prime stock was plentiful, and choice wethers were about 3/ a head dearer than last week’s, while some ewes were 2/ per head better than last week. The New Zealand Lean and Mercantile'Agency Co., Ltd., reports the sale as follows: —
Sheep.—-A smaller yarding, which met with a ready demand. Heavy prime wethers, £1 12/ to £1 13/6; medium prime, £1 9/ to £1 11/6; light prime, £1 5/ to £1 8/9; small and unfinished, £1 2/ to £1 4/9; prime maiden ewes, £1 2/6 to £1 5/6; heavy prime ewes. £1 to £1 2/; medium prime, 18/ to 19/6; light prime. 16/ to 17/9; just killable ewes, 12/6 to 15/6; ether ewes, 8/ to 10/.' Lambs—Extra heavy prime, £1 4/3 to £1 676; heavy prime, £1 2/6 to £1 4/; medium prime, 19/6 to £1 2/; light prime, 17/ to 19/; unfinished, best, 12/6 to 17/; others, 8/ to 12/. Pigs.—A large yarding mot with steady competition at late rates. Choppers, £1 5/ to £4 3/; heavy and medium baconers, £3 17/ to £4 7/; light bacqners and heavy porkers, £3 to £3 15/; medium porkers and light porkers, £2 to £2 18/; small, £1 12/ to £1 18/; large stores. £1 to £1 9/; slips, 12/ to 18/; weaners, 4/ to 12/. Calves. —There was a good average yarding of calves, the quality being better than for some time. The demand was poor, and values did not improve. Runners, £2 to £7; heavy vealers, £4 to £5 2/; medium, £3 to £3 16/; light, £2 5/ to £2 18/; smaller, £1 10/ to £2 2/; small, 18/ to £1 8/; rough calves, 10/ to £1; freshdropped to three weeks old. 5/ to 16/.
