OUR MAILBAG

Douglas Ryan—Hope you will be lucky soon, Douglas. We can do with all the help possible for this big scheme of ours. I meant to drop you a special line from camp, Doug, and somehow it slipped my memory. But the apples arrived safely, and they were splendid. Thanks very, very much. i. jiM Lodina Turketo—Good drawings get points, Lodina. Glad you liked the comp, and the orphanage scheme. Can we “bank” on Onerahi helping? Moyna Frood— A grand idea it is, Moyna. Every Northlander, ■ I feel sure, will give his utmost help. Thanks for your contribution. There were only twelve stamps, though, weren’t there? Joy Doel says: “Please enrol me as a member of the Kupe Club as I want to send you a little help for the Tikipunga Orphanage. I think all boys and girls will want to help.”— Very glad to enrol you, Joy. You could have contributed without being a club member, though. Best wishes to you. Ivy Jenkins (Matapouri): Dear Enemy: The Caterpillar is Hotete — the kumera caterpillar. You will find them . all colours. It will eat convolvulus leaves but is particularly fond of kumera leaves. At Poroti school last week one of these caterpillars ate three kumera leaves in one day. ‘lt develops into a huge moth with a SI-inch wing span. .This moth is called both Sphinx Moth and Giant Hawk moth. The Phantom Six—A colourful greeting, girls, for which we thank you sincerely. How are the boys doing in your district. Now’s their chance to get busy and show you how much they can make for our orphanage campaign. Doris Halliday —A letter full of interest, Doris. I’ve personally posted a duplicate three points, so they should arrive safely. Many thanks for both the letter and the contributions. Edna Clark —Thrilling indeed, Edna. The “shooting star” was a meteor. Your contribution was among the first received. Thanks. Gwenda Akast— Sixpence for the Orphanage Fund! Thank you, Gwenda, and thanks, too, for the good wishes contained in your letter. Colin Akast —And you’ve also helped. That was splendid, Colin. Norma Carter— More assistance. i That’s fine, Norma.

I rather welcome short stories these days. Edwin Williams —’Fraid you weren’t awarded a certificate for the Jig Saw competition, Edwin. So Laurel didn’t like her trip to hospital. I’m sure the Doctor and the nurses were very kind to her. Irene Baker —We were very sorry about the pup, Irene, but glad to hear you have such an interesting terrier. Raku teases Kim, and scoots up trees just for the fun of climbing. Will send you your badge soon, so watch out for it.
