BORSTAL SENTENCE FOR CAR CONVERSION
A young man, Robert John Mann, appeared at the, Whangarei Police Court this morning on remand, to answer three charges of conversion of motor cars from his employers, the Whangarei Engineering Company, the theft of two gallons of benzine from the company, and also of driving without a license on the three occasions on which he took cars. 1 Accused, who pleaded 'guilty to all offences, elected ot be dealt with by the court. Mann had previously been before the court in February, when he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on a charge of car conversion and theft. On this occasion the probation officer had given a good report of defendant and his employers had stated that they would be prepared to keep him in their employ. In passing sentence of two years at a Borstal Institution, the magistrate, Mr G, N. Morris, said that Mann had been given a chance, but had not taken advantage of it. Previously, boys given a chance by this court had shown gratitude by keeping straight, but Mann was one of the exceptions.
