PRICES’ DOWN AT WELLINGTON WOOL SALE

T .Per Press Association Copyright .] WELLINGTON, This Day.

Down by Id to l|d per 11b. on January figures appeared to be a fairly general opinion of the wool market at the Wellington wool sale today. Growers and brokers were prepared by latest market reports for a relatively low range of values. The catalogue closed with 27,289 bales, although the allotment was 30,000, and as' the sale proceeded it was evident there would be some withdrawals in every catalogue, besides which a large proportion of the lots actually submitted were passed in, failing to reach reserves. Some of the wodl was sold privately after the fall of the hammer.

The attendance of buyers was large and fully representative. Bradford was not doing much, and Japan apparently nothing at all.

The frequency with which lots were passed in emphasised the fact that it is the opinion of many growers that their wool is of greater value than the restricted limits of buyers. It is a matter of comment that a large part of the wool offered in earlier catalogues sold at round about 9d per lb., and this, included lots described as A and B hoggets. Crossbred ewes sold at B|d to 9sd. Some lines of A.A. hogget wool commanded lOd to 104 d, but these were far from Halfbreds failed to attract bids much above lOd. Many were passed in at 9 ; i‘d or lower. It is estimated that halfbreds will be 2d per lb down, on January sales. Lambs appeared to be in strong demand, especially by New Zealand manufacturers, and sold up to 13£d, but the bulk realised lid to 12d. Bellies and pieces sold from 7?d to B|d.
