ASSEMBLIES BARRED IN SINGAPORE
(Received 10 a.m.) SINGAPORE, January 10
Following upon the dispersal of 2000 Chinese, who were taking part in an anti-Japanese procession, and the arrest of 100 demonstrators by the police, the Government has issued an announcement prohibiting all road assemblies and processions, unless they are of a religious character or licensed. One thousand Chinese demonstrated last evening at the Central Police Station, where the 100 arrested men were singing lustily in the lock-up.
Bricks and bottles were thrown, and two policemen were sent to hospital, others being slightly injured.
The demonstrators gradually dispersed after midnight. This morning the police station area was patrolled by armed policemen.
