TERUEL SURRENDERS TO LOYALISTS

CIVIL

(Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, January 8. A message from Barcelona says Colonel Reydancourt, commander of the remnant of the rebel force which was holding out at Teruel, surrendered, with 1500 combatants and noncombatants, who were sheltering in Asuncion Hospital. A truce earlier was arranged to allow 500 injured children, women and old men to be removed from the hospital. They were watched respectfully by the Republican soldiers, who were moved to pity by the tragic scene. All the injured wei’e in a terrible physical condition, halfstarved and crying for food and water. Many of them fainted as soon as they stepped out. The soldiers comforted them and showed them every consideration. It is officially announced that, in addition to the foregoing surrender, 140 other persons, including the Bishop of Teruel, surrendered from the Santa Clara Convent. Teruel is now definitely “cleaned up.” The Government is giving the maximum of respect to the prisoners. Undaunted by the surrender of their compatriots in Teruel, rebel forces are still attacking the city from the North.
