The French Ministry of the Interior has banned two Italian newspapers, presumably as a reprisal against the embargo on the circulation of French newspapers in Italy. The action is noteworthy, as being the first attempt to pay back the dictatorships in their own coin. ♦ * ♦ * The “Sunday Graphic” reports that Britain will shortly open negotiations for a trade treaty with Signor Mussolini. She is prepared to lend Italy £50,000,000, provided II Duce keeps the peace and abandons his anti-Brit-ish propaganda.
Count and Countess von Luckner arrived at Apia in their yacht Sea Devil, from Pago Pago. They will slay there indefinitely.
A severe earthquake shock was experienced at Rabaul early yesterday morning. The residents were thrown into a panic. Crockery and ornaments were broken, but there was no serious damage. The disturbance was similar to that which preceded the volcanic eruption at the end of last May.
Special observation launches, each carrying 80 possengers, who will be enabled to view the shipbuilding yards in Glasgow, have been ordered by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company for the Empire Exhibition, to be opened in Glasgow in the spring. —(8.0.W.)
The Paris paper, “Humanite,” announces that it is learned that the French Government has decided to withdraw its guarantee of credit on supplies of war materials from Czechoslovakia to Rumania. Consequently, all arms factories in Czechoslovakia have suspended all shipments of war materials to Rumania.
