QTONE fruit in Canterbury this season is being very seriously affected by brown rot. According to Mr D. G. Goodwin, chief orchard inspector of the Department of Agriculture in Canterbury, this disease, which had been mainly responsible for the shortage in cherry crops, was now also affecting the apricots and peach crops.—Special.
A PPLICATIONS for casual farming work, particularly harvesting, continue to be received in large numbers by the Hamilton Placement Office. From 12 to 20 men a day have been applying for sqch work during the past week. The demand for such labour is still far short of the supply, and only 12 men were placed in harvesting positions during the week.— Special.
LARGE peat fire has been raging x ' in the Ruawaro-Rotongaro district in an area of swamp covering 250 to 300 acres since early this week. A farmer in the vicinity expressed his opinion that the fire seemed to be abating.
