Tennis
(Received 10 a.m.)
MELBOURNE. January 7
The triangular international tennis contest was again marred by rain today, and there were serious delays in Ihe matches. The results were:—
Singles.—Henkel (Germany) defeated Qnist (Australia). 2-6. 11-9, 6-2: Budge (America) defeated Bromwich (Australia). 6-4, 8-6.
Doubles. —von Crarnm and Henkel (Germany) defeated Budge and Mako (America), 6-4, 8-6. Henkel won his first singles since arriving in Australia when he defeated Quist. The German showed much better form than against Mako yesterday. Both Henkel and Quist played with the net as their objective, and both gave displays of remarkable volleying. Backhand volleying errors were responsible for Quist’s failure. In the match between Budge and Bromwich, the young Australian was consistent and played better than ever before. Budge made errors until the score was 5-6 in the second set. In the next three games Budge overwhelmed Bromwich with world-championship form. ,
In the doubles, Henkel gave one of the finest exhibitions seen at the Kooyong Stadium, completely dominating the match, though he received valuable support from von Gramm.
