WOMEN’S INSTITUTE NEWS

KIRIPAKA. The December meeting of the Kiripaka Women’s Institute took the form of a children’s Christmas party. Proceedings opened with the presentation of a bouquet to Mrs Sands, the president. Santa Claus distributed presents to all and the children much enjoyed the bran tub. Special thanks are expressed to Mr J. Harris and Mr R. Clemo for procuring the Christmas tree. Mrs E. M. Ellin’s competition for a child’s school lunch, containing no white flour, was keenly competed for and was won by Mrs F; Simmonds, with Mrs H. E. Johnson second and Mrs Sands third. A nursery rhyme competition was won by Mrs W. A. Ellin. OPOUKENO. No business was done at the December meeting of the Opoukeno Institute, which took the form of a Christmas tree for the children of the district. Forty children and also a number of parents were present. Each child received a present from the well-laden boughs, and after lunch games were played. A bran tub and its contents were a great attraction, causing much fun. Afternoon tea terminated a busy and enjoyable function.

NGUNGURU. The Ngunguru Women’s Institute held their fourth birthday on December 17 in the form of a dance, visitors from Matapouri, Kiripaka and Hikurangi Institutes .being present. Mr B. Goodhew carried out the duties of M.C. Music was supplied by Brown Bros., of Marua, while extras were played by Mr and Mrs Cunningham, of Hikurangi. Miss Barber and Mr Roy Pullman won the first Monte Carlo, while Miss Warn and Mr Ted Amos carried off the prizes for the second. ' Three of Miss Warrington’s pupils gave an exhibition of Highland, toe and tap dancing, which was much enjoyed by all. Mr Cunningham, Mr Appleby and Mr' Cunningham, Jnr., also gave a much enjoyed tap dance. Two plays were well acted by Women’s Institute members. Miss Grogan and Miss Armstrong presented one, and the principals in the other were ; Mrs H. A. Snell and c Mrs A. Watson. . Mrs Armstrong spoke on behalf of the Ngunguru Institute, and Mrs Morrison, president of the Matapcuri Institute, cut the birthday cake.
