Oil On Brakes

SUGGESTED REMEDY. CHECK REAR BRAKE DRUMS. In cases where grease or oil gets on the brake linings, in addition to checking for wheel cylinder leaks, a wellknown manufacturing plant recommends that the rear brake drums be shocked to see if oil has been thrown from the centre toward the brake surface.

If this has occurred, it indicates a leak at the rear axle felt seal. Small

amounts of grease leaking or coming through the rear axle felt seals should be carried outside the brake drums by the rear axle oil deflector, and if the grease is carried inside the brake drum it indicates a leak at this point. To correct this condition loosen the deflector and apply a coat of gasket paste between the deflector and the axle flange to prevent grease from entering the brake drum. If the grease leak through the rear axle felt seals is excessive it will probably be necessary to install new rear axle felt seals. When installing new felt seals it is advisable to apply gasket paste around the outer edge to prevent oil from passing arpund the outside of the retainer.
