VALE! FRANK COBURN

(By Modernist)

With the passing of Frank Coburn, a colourful personality has been removed from bowling circles. One of the pioneers of the game, who started in Weaver’s Paddock. Frank quickly developed as a player and built up a record and reputation which will last as long as the curving ball game is played in Whangarei. His successes at singles can be seen on the Honours Board in the pavilion —his name appears also among the past presidents. But it was as a skip that his bowling genius really shone and many present-day players learned much that they know about tactics from the Master Mind. Before the shadows of succeeding years started to shade his form, F.C. was the possessor of a wicked drive and it is doubtful if we will again see anyone so skilful at flicking a bowl out of a head sideways, with a straight ’un. The sympathy of Northland bowlers is extended to the sorrowing family.
