DEMANDS DOUBLING OF U.S. FLEET
(Received 10 a.m.)
WASHINGTON, December 26,
Mr M. J. Maas (Duluth —Minn.), senior Republican member of the House of Representatives’ Committee, demanded doubling of the American Fleet, declaring that the Pacific Fleet would be wholly inadequate in the event of hostilities, because European as well as Far Eastern Powers would be involved.
Mr .Maas' said he understood President Roosevelt was recommending a 50,000,000-dollsr increase in the Navj r appropriations for 1938-39 in order to start construction of two more battleships and several smaller vessels.
He added that the proposal for four more battleships was also being discussed.
Mr Taylor, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, demanded more powerful naval and air fleets. “Many Americans believe,” he said, “that the United States should not supinely submit to Japan’s insolent treatment.
“America would be justified in showing the world that we are going to get ready and that we are not hunting for a fight, but are not afraid of one.”
