False Pretences At Kaitaia
Robert Herewith, of Te Hapua, a Maori, aged 20, was charged before Messrs L. A. Mclntosh and W. H. Atkins. J.P.’s, at the Kaitaia Police Court on Tuesday with false pretences, in that, on December 4. he represented that a cheque for £l, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, and purporting to be signed by Ivon Vegar was valid. The accused pleaded guilty. It was slated by Sergeant Claaseu that Herewith had a Maori boy friend, aged 15. as an accomplice. This boy had been working for Mrs Wild. Kailaia. and while there possessed himself of a cheque book. Pie drew two cheques, one for £1 and one for £5 10/. and induced the accused to try to cash the cheque for £l. This cheque was presented at Nobles Ltd., and the assistant, noticing that "Ivan” was incorrectly spelt. doubted its genuineness. The accused, on being questioned. said his name was Dobson, and that he lived at Pukepoto. While enquiries were being made he disappeared from the shop. The accused wa.s placed on probation for six months. ll appeared, said Sergeant Claaseu later, that die intention of the two youths was to hold back the cheque for £5 10 for a Christmas splash. Endeavours to trace the younger boy had not yet been successful. ,
