MAIN DARGAVILLE ROAD STILL FLOODED

With the exception of the main Dargaville road, all highways in Northland were back to normal yesterday evening, after the heavy rain cf the previous two days. This morning, it was reported that there was still six feet of water over the worst part of the road, and traffic was using the Houto route. Further rain commenced to fall last night and continued fairly steadily throughout the night and today. Water Receding Rapidly.

The Whangarei patrol of the A.A. reported at 1.30 today that the water on the Dargaville road was going down rapidly, and by late this afternoon traffic should be able to use the road with care.

Flood Causes Inconvenience

The cross-road connecting the Opuawhanga and Marua roads was flooded again on Wednesday night, causing inconvenience.

In an interview this morning, Mr Hobbs stated that the depth of water over the road was about 4ft 6iri. in places and that traffic was held up. He suggested that posts showing the depth should be erected along the flooded portions to give travellers an idea of the depth and, at the sametime, to indicate the position of the road to those who wished to negotiate the floods. i

Something of the kind was necessai’y to prevent strangers attempting to drive through the floods from getting into serious difficulties as just off the road in one part a stranger might easily find himself in 1§ feet of water. The estimate for filling up the low parts of the road was given as £75 some few months ago and. the council had been appealed to several times to alleviate the trouble. Sign-posts had also been asked for but these had not yet been granted. Mr Hobbs estimated that about seven chains of road were subject to flood. Last February twelve months ago the flood over the road was sft deep near his residence.
