So far, there has''been no official confirmation of the recommendation of the Acclimatisation Societies’ Federation that the coming season be an open one for game throughout Northland. However, the gazetting of regulations is expected at any time. Inter-Club Croquet. The Whangarei Croquet Club is leading in the inter-club competition, matches in which are played fortnightly. In the latest series, Whangarei travelled to Hikurangi and won by 79 points to 73 while Kensington visited Portland to lose by 84 points to the home club’s 93.

Pedigree Pig Sale. Good entries for high-class stock have been received for the pedigree sale; to be conducted by the Northland Branch of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association at Kamo on April 14. The. closing date was yesterday. Included in the pigs being brought forward are several prizewinners at the Whangarei stock show.

Fish Hatchery Ee-established. At the annual meeting of the Whangarei Acclimatisation Society : next month, interesting details will be released regarding the re-establishment of a fish hatchery at Oherahi. • The executive, has definitely decided to encourage this side of . the., society’s activities, and ova, for the stocking of district streams during the coming season, will be procured from Otago. Activity at the fish , hatchery ceased seme three years ago.

Shortness Of Loin In Northland Pigs. Mr H. Kneebone, gave a demonstration at the Moerewa Works on the bacon pig carcases for the national bacon championship, stated that the references which he made to hams and the length of loin applied to the show carcases and not to the general run of Northland pigs. Shortness of loin, Mr. Kneebone says, is one of the chief faults with a big percentage of the pigs in Northland, and a fault which must be rectified before the district can reach the top in its production. Mangawai Sports, The postponed annual sports of the Mangawai Athletic Club are to be held on Saturday, April 10, and .the full programme is appearing in tonight’s issue. , Axemen and athletes are advised of several well-paid track events and four good chops, so it behoves those interested to get into touch with the secretary, Mr. F. Coronation Scenic Resferve. . The offer of Mr F. S. Holman, Whau Valley, to prepare an inventory of the native trees in the Coronation Scenic Reserve has been accepted by the Whangarei Borough Council.

Kensington Park Grounds. The Whangarei Rugby Union has applied for the use of grounds Nos. 1, 2. and 3 at Kensington Park for the coming season. It is believed that other sports bodies, including one which has not previously used Kensington Park, will also be applying for areas. A suggested allocation of grounds will be made by the parks committee and referred to the Borough Council.

Vine and Walton Street Corner. An offer was recently submitted by the Whangarei Borough Council for! the purchase of an area of land at the corner of Vine and Bank Streets. While not being prepared to sell at the price offered, the owner, Mr L. W. 'Nelson, has submitted an amended plan, showin.g the building removed from the corner for a distance of approximately 10 feet, this area to be .used for street widening purposes. Mr Nelson has been thanked by the council for his generosity in dedicating the area to the council at no cost except that of dedication.

Queen Carnival Planned. Preliminary arrangements are being made by the Whangarei Rugby Union for holding a monster queen carnival during the forthcoming winter season. The idea has been explained by the leading officials of the union, and enthusiastically taken up at club fneetings. Further action will be taken at the conclusion of the present series of club meetings, as it is desired as much as possible to make the organisation ion a club basis.

Old Players’ Association.

Prompted by the interest taken in the display of photographs of footballers of previous generations, shown in Whangarei last year, the Whangarei Rugby Union has under consideration the formation of an Old Players’ Association, and is trying to' get in touch with old players, npt limited to Whangarei.. Much spade work has yet to be done, but it is intended to hold a reunion this year. Not only has the idea got splendid social possibilities, but it is also hoped to induce old players to take an interest in present-day clubs and the activities of tjbe Union generally. A number of > old players already spoken to are very enthusiastic. -

Alteration In Camp Pates. In order to fit in with the requirements of the North Auckland Regiment (Infantry), who will be carrying out the presentation of their new colours on May 2 instead of April 25, the date of the North Auckland Mounted Rifles camp have been put back one week, and will be from Wednesday May 5 to Saturday May 15 (including days of arrival and departure) . Those Who like to be, out with the guns on May 1 will relish the change in dates.

Motor Cycle and Car Troop. While the formation of a motor cycle and light car troop for the North Auckland Mounted Rifles is not yet authorised, authority has been given for up to 12 motor cycles and six light cars to be taken by their owners to the annual camp of that regiment at Dargaville next month. The formation will be tried out as a reconnaissance group, and for inter-communication. Trainees Who desire to take a light car or motor cycle to camp instead of a horse, should communicate with Cap.tain H. M. Foster, Adjutant of the Regiment, who will furnish them with particulars as to allowance for petrol, and also the degree of responsibility which will be taken by the Government for machines so used.

At the Maungatapere Sports on Easter Monday, the Whangarei Boys’ Band will be in attendance. Besides rendering a number of musical selections, this band proposes to give an exhibition quick-step march. 720
