Kaitaia Club

Golf

Annual Meeting ■ The annual meeting of the Kaitaia Golf. Club was held in the A. & P. Hall on Tuesday evening, and was well attended. Mr H. McDonald president, was in the chair. Annual Report. The annual report stated that during the year a clubhouse was erected, but several details had yet to be completed. With the contents, it had been insured for £95. In May last the course was visited by Mr F. Branch, and the layout proposed by him which, for the most part follows the present course, had’, not been fully implemented because of lack of funds. During the off season' the greens had been cut fairly frequently,, and the course had been cleared of tea-tree and gorse? At present, mowing was being proceeded with and an .all-round improvement in the course could-be noted. The committee had committed the club to an expenditure, of £25 for top-dressing. The membership last year showed a healthy increase, and the indications were that the level would be maintained this season. The annual ball had been a success financially and socially, and thanks were due .to the lady members and all who assisted with the function. The committee was also v indebted to .tiie ladies for financial assistance by rneans of jumble sales and card evenings. , ■ It was suggested that a special fee be charged/for entrance to all matches for the season'. Consequent upon the •Supreme Court decision in the Manor Park case, the committee recommended that an insurance policy be taken but covering the club and its individual members under; the New Zealand Golf Council’s scheme. The cost to individual members would be 1/6 which would provide a cover up, to £IOOO in any one case or up to £4OOO in any one year; Balance Sheet, v The balance sheet showed a satisfactory position, but way and means would have found for carrying out improvements in view and to provide for a reduction in the heavy liabilities. The arrangement with the bank provided for a reduction in the club's limit to £75 by June 1. The reduction due last year was, by arrangement with the bank, reduced to £25. The expenditure in fertilisers; grass seed 'and gredn-keeping would have to be provided for. The Committee hoped that with a definite club day fixed for the coming season they would be able to arrange for more inter-clUb matches. - The balance sheet showed that the subscriptions for the year totalled £ll2 9/-. Both the report and balance sheet were adopted,;* - : t ; / Election of Officers; ' , . The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr L, J. Hester; president, Mr H. McDonald; vice-presidents, Messrs R. H. Kelly, J, A, H. Stanton; club captain, Mr A. Mr McDonald said they all sympathised with Mr Thornton in his illness.

Ladies’ Section. A motion of which notice had been given was moved by Mr McDonald that the Section be controlled by a committee consisting of seven ladies, and that the ladies be represented on the main executive by two of their members. It was pointed out that the club was growing and that separate control of matches was desirable. The motion was seconded by Mr Stanton. Mr Wilkinson: If the motion is carried, it will be necessary to join the L.G.U. He moved as an amendment that the number of the committee be reduced to five. The amendment was agreed to and the motion as amended was carried. General. It was decided that Saturday be club day. The president said he was hopeful that he would be able to arrange home and home matches with Broadwood, Mangamuka, Russell and possibly Kerikeri, Mr Vaughan asked that as much encouragement and help be given Thursday players as possible. The president gave an assurance that this would be done. It was moved by Mr McDonald, and seconded by Mr Smeaton, that it be a recommendation to the committee that hn entrance fee’ be not charged this year to new members. Mr Christensen opposed the motion, and Mr Stanton thought that some fee should be charged. He moved as an Amendment that an entrance fee of 5/- be charged men and 2/6 ladies. The amendment was carried It was resolved that in the case of subscriptions paid by June 1 a rebate be made of 10/6 to ladies and 5/- to men. An invitation was received to attend the opening day of the Oruru Club on April 11. The opening day for the Kaitaia Club was fixed for April 18. Mr Kelly thought some change should be made in the system of handicapping/ The president: That is the duty of the match committee, which had been up against great difficulties owing to players not putting in cards.
