WITH THE WHANGAREI ROWING CLUB

SUCCESSFUL TRIAL AND MIXED FOURS The trial four races staged by the Whangarei Rowing Club last Saturday were the most successful Held at the shed for many years. The oarsmen were all in good fettle as a result of their regular training for the big regatta and thus splendid racing was the order. Close finishes were general, the biggest winning margin of the day being a length. The mixed four trials proved most successful. In these, two men and two ladies comprised the crews. The ladies rowed particularly well behind the male stroke and the racing was very good. The club has 16 lady members. Misses A. Dent and K. Pickmere are showing the best stroke development and Miss "Dent promises to be the best lady stroke next season. Misses B. Jack and Z. Phillips are the pick of the number threes. The results were:— Trial Fours. " Lovatt (stroke). Cooper, G. Patterson and Goodison beat Gardner (stroke), Auld, Leech and Brown, by two feet. Storey (stroke), Cormack, Torrence and Mason, beat Bindon (stroke), Price, Hughes and Hewin, by a length. Final.—Storey’s crew beat Lovatc’s by a quarter of a length. Mixed Fours. Haftnam (sttoke), Auld, Misses A. tlent and M. Coe, beat Gardner (stroke), H- Patterson, Misses J. Ross and C. Holland, by a length. Final. —Bindon (st.), Price, Miss K. Pickmere and Mrs L. Hhll. beat Harnam’s crew, by a quarter of a length. There is still another series of trial j fours to be rowed before the season is j officially closed about the end of April, j Some of the regatta crews intend to j remain in training throughout the win- I ter. j The club secretary recently received ( a congratulatory letter from Mr C. G. Herdman. president of the Auckland Rowing Association in regard to the I Kioreroa regatta. Mr Herdman des- j cribed this course as second to none ( in New Zealand and intimated his intention to endeavour to arrange lor a New Zealand championship regatta to be staged there.
