Singapore Base Architect In N.Z.

( The consulting naval architect to Sir John Jackson, who is in charge of , construction operations at the Singapore Naval Base, arrived from Sydney today on a holiday visit. He is Mr. , J. Douglas Calder, of Glasgow. In 1927 Mr. Calder read his fifst paper on a design of coastal vessels to the ' institute of Marine Architects. Since t then he has been engaged on the Singapore Naval Base. He visited the base frequently, his longest stay there being 11 months. Mr. Calder refused to comment on the work at Singapore, except to say that if ever there was a naval base built purely for defensive •purposes, the Singapore base was it.
