STREET GUTTERS TO BE CONCRETED

The borough engineer is to report on the cost and advisability of concreting footpath gutters in Whangarei. This subject was raised by Cr. A. T. Brainsby at last night’s meeting of the council. “Water lodges there and becomes stagnant and dirty and a .breeding ground for mosquitoes and all kinds of germs,” he said. “It makes the appearance of the main streets generally very unsavoury. Storm water, or drainage from drinking fountains, keeps some gutters in the main thoroughfares continually wet, and not in keeping with the bright appearance the town should bear.” “This is a very necessary work,” commented Cr. R. S. Finch, chairman of the works committee. “I have asked the engineer to bring down a report. tut, right at the end of our year. I have been a little frightened concerning our finances. “The concreting of gutters on both sides of Lower Bank Street and portion at least of Cameron Street, will be placed on the estimates for the coming year. It will be a fairly expensive job.”
