OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM BROPHY | There will be much regret, particularly among the aquatic fraternity, at jthe death of Mr William Brophy. De- | ceased had been ill for three weeks 'having contracted a cold which develi oped into pneumonia, and passed away | in the Whangarei Hospital at 7 o’clock this morning. He was aged 56. Mr Brophy could well be termed the yachtsman’s friend. His obliging nature and readiness to give assistance made him such.

j Deceased’s birthplace was Ponsonby I and on leaving school, he was apprenj tised to the boat-building trade, in the j employ of Charles bailey, a wellknown Auckland firm. After many years there. Mr Brophy moved to Whangarei and acquired the business belonging to Mr Mclntosh. When in Auckland, “Bill,” as he was known to all on the waterfront, built the Sceptre, the champion 16footer of Auckland for over eight years. The yacht never suffered defeat, and eventually broke away in a gale and was broken up. Mr Brophy was married over 25 years ago in Whangarei to Miss Russek. He is survived by his wife and a large family, ranging ’in age from 14 years downward. The funeral takes place at the Maunu cemetery at 2 o’clock on Saturday.
