Out and About in the North
TUTEKEHUA The Tutekehua school held its calf club day last week. Mr White, of Waihou, acted as judge. There was a large number of parents present, and a most enjoyable and instructive day was spent. Of the 14 entries, Mary Mulcahy came first in the light class with 112 points out of 130. In the heavy class, Norma Julian was first with 1122- points, and for the best dairy type, Dallas Cook came first with 11 IS. Messrs H. Sloane and Baldwin judged the calves at the Omahutu school. There were very few entries. Betty Campbell was first for the best caredfor calf, and Maurice Campbell for the best dairy type.
MANGAMUKA BRIDGE The Douglas Social Credit Club held its meeting (monthly) on December 4 in the school room at Mangamuka Bridge. Mr J. V. Cauty occupied the chair and Mr H. Robinson acted as reader.
KOHUKOHU Mr Owen Budd left Kohukohu last week for Portland, where he intends joining his and taking up his residence. Mr H. Williams is home again from his holiday at Devonport. Mr and Mrs E. Farrell arrived in Kohukohu on Saturday evening and expect to be here till after' Christmas. Mr and Mrs Leo. Keys and Yvonne are home again after a three-weeks’ holiday spent in Auckland. Mr Tom Brown has returned from his trip to Dunedin on Masonic business.
Miss E. Hastley is home again. Her month’s holiday was spent in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs L. Cherrington and small son, of National Park, are the guests of Mr and Mrs W. A. Kirkpatrick, Kohukohu.
ORAWAU In the second round of the' North Hokianga shield matches, Orawau played Herekino at Broadwood on Saturday, December 5, defeating Herekino by six tvickets and 100 runs. Herekino bdtted first and failed to get going, the total being 35. Orawau replied with 134 for four wickets, and declared, with an hour and a half to go, but failed to dislodge the Herekino' batsmen,- Buckland making a fine 71.
MOEREWA Messrs White and Tantrum, sampling officers for the Hay of Islands Herd Testing Association, have been, doing the rounds of herds in this neighbourhood during the past week. Mrs L. Irwin, now resident at Newmarket, Auckland, has been holidaying and is the guest of Mrs J. Ready: / Mr Riddle., the new postmaster at Kawakawa, paid a visit to Moerewa on Friday last. Mr W. Burke -.the newly appointed labour bureau officer at Kawakawa, also visited Moerewa last week.
This year ill luck seems to have followed. .Mr Jack Keogh, of Otiria, who is well known in this' district. On Friday, he had the misfortune to have a hand badly cut (necessitating the insertion of several stitches) while working on the railway in the Motatau district. He was smartly conveyed to Kawakawa, where Dr Frengley attended to the injury. An artery had actually bepn laid bare by the wound, but fortunately it was not severed. Mr Keogh only recently started work after recovering from a broken leg, the result of . a football accident. This makds his third accident within the year. It is hoped that the New" Year will change his luck.
MANGONUI
The summer ball held by the Oruru golf committee on Friday, sth, in' Hayden’s hall, Peria, was a great success. There was a fair attendance, and a very pleasant evening was spent by all. Extras were played by Mrs W. Christensen, Misses. Audrey and Ruby Christensen and Mr E. Harris. The duties of M.C. were -capably carried out by Mr Stevenson. A dainty supper was served and dancing was continued .until an early hour. Miss J. Halley, of Wellington, has joined her mother at the residence of her uncle, Mr S. F. Cadigan, Cooper’s Beach. Mrs H. H. Smith, George Street, is spending a few weeks’ holiday in Auckland.
