HUKATERE

One of the most successful gatherings held in the annals of the district took place on Friday evening last, in the public hall, the occasion being a send-off to Mr and Mrs J. Hammond, who are leaving Hukatere. In addition to local residents many from other parts of Otamatea county, where Mr Hammond has been well and favourably known as a contractor under the county council, attended to show their goodwill for the guests of the evening, and their good wishes for their future success. Mr George Jeffs acted as M.C. and music for the dancing was supplied by a local orchestra led by Messrs Hall.

During an interval in the evening Mr Stan. Carrick. on behalf of friends of Hukatere and other county centres, presented Mr Hammond with a leather suit case suitably inscribed, and Mrs Hammond with a crystal water set. Mi Carrick spoke in high appreciation of the guests of the evening, and bore simple and sincere testimony to the excellent name they were leaving behind them in the district and county, where they were so well known and widely respected.

Mr and Mrs Hammond were accorded musical honours, and several musical items by local friends added to the interest of the evening.

A tribute should be paid to Mr Hammond for his fine work as a contractor under the Otamatea County Council. He has carried a reputation for speed and thoroughness, and the generous way he has treated his employees. Tribute should also be paid to Mrs Hammond's kindness and Christian character.
