FORTUNES FLUCTUATE IN EXCITING WAY

[United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright .l (Received 10 a.m.) BRISBANE, December 8.

The first cricket test between Australia and England was continued today in fine weather, although rain was threatening towards the end of the day. The wicket was in fairly good order, but it permitted the slow bowlers tn secure a fair amount of spin. *

England, who had scored 358 in its first innings against Australia’s total bf 234, continued its second innings today with two wickets down for 75. The Englishmen, faced by the deadly slow bowling of the Australians, were forced to fight hard throughout, and the side was finally dismissed for 256.

Australia’s Bad Start.

This left Australia with 381 runs to win—a difficult task for a team having fourth use of a wearing wicket. Australia commenced its second innings just before stumps and lost one wicket for three runs.

The advantage fluctuated in an exciting manner today, with England fighting hard to improve on its first innings advantage of 124 runs. Bradman persisted with his slow bowlers and the English batsmen, not liking the spin the trundlers were securing, were on the defensive.

Leyland, as in the first innings, held the English team together with a valuable innings for 33, but it was left to the captain, Allen, to save his side from a debacle. Wards Fine Bowling.

Ward had all the English batsmen in difficulties, and he maintained an accurate length and flighted the ball well in taking six wickets for 102. An interesting feature of England’s innings was that O’Reilly, recognised as one of Australia’s most deadly bowlers, failed to take a wicket. Sievers did splendidly to take three for 29. Australia’s position was not improved when Fingleton went out first ball to Voce, after previously having appealed against the light. , Details of the scores are as follow: — ENGLAND.
