MURDER AT WILL IN MADRID
FRANCO PROMISES EARET OFFENSIVE
[United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright .] (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, December 8. The leader of the Spanish insurgents, General Franco, is keeping up the hearts of his adherents by repeating his premise of an early full strength offensive against Madrid.
The total death roll on this front is estimated at 500 a day for the past month.
Three Englishmen were killed in the November fighting.
The House of Commons delegation returned from Spain, and will see the Foreign Secretary, Mr Eden, today.
The Madrid correspondent of “The Times” says that less than a dozen actual war prisoners could be mustered in Madrid, because those not summarily shot were compelled to serve in the loyalist forces. The Government allowed the British delegation to go everywhere, to see everything, and privately to interview prisoners.
But the Government, which must maintain its administration while conducting a revolution, dare not .risk splitting the Popular Front, the iconoclast section of which is taking advantage of the situation by unjustified arrests and executions.
In addition, the lawless militia men, who never take a turn in the trenches, murder at will.
This hideous feature of the revolution has reached such proportions that it demands, not only Government action but international control.
