FLOUR FOR BREAD
INVESTIGATION OF COMPLAINTS
Complaints „in regard to the quality of flour available for bread making resulted in the Whangarei Sub-Pro-vincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union writing to the Minister of Industries and Commerce. As a result a visit was paid to the North by a representaive of the department and advice given. Mrs L. Williams said that the authority was inclined to doubt that they were having as much trouble as they said they were experiencing, but she believed that a genuine attempt to help had been made. Mr A. Wiblin said that he had pointed out that women who had been making bread for 20 years would not all of a sudden make bread that was not fit for feeding to pigs.
Mr J. G. Barclay, M.P., said he had inquired into the matter in Wellington and was told that the reason was that a grade of wheat had been taken in at the request of the Canterbury growers, because of the wet summer. It would not otherwise have been taken. It was only a passing phase and was done to help the Canterbury farmers. It was decided to ask permission to publish a recipe submitted by Mr R. I A'. Hansen of the department.
