RURAL TELEPHONES
NO CONSOLIDATION YET At the meeting of the Whangarei Sub-Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday a letter was received from the Postmaster-General in regard to the consolidation of rural telephones. He stated that the matter had been given careful consideration, but, to give effect to the proposal, would mean more machinery, and that would mean higher rentals to account for the loss of toll calls.
Mr J. G. Barclay, M.P., said that last session the rural members of the Government had discussed the question with the Postmaster-General and Mr McNamara in regard to the question. The members had wanted a uniform rent of £lO, but Mr McNamara was adamant. He said that he had a surplus of £IO,OOO and that would vanish if the concession was granted. However, it seemed that something would have to be done. It may be that the rate could be increased to a uniform one of £ll or £l2,
The president, Mr A. B. Moore, said that it was satifying to know that the position was being watched.
