DROWNING NARROWLY AVERTED

r Per Press Association. Copyright .] GISBORNE, This Day.

A drowning was narrowly averted at Wainui Beach yesterday morning, when t\do young men, Messrs R. S. Kinder and W. A. Bell, were thrown into the sea 400 yards from the shore. They had gone out in a 12-foot yacht, which capsized and then drifted seaward. When the boat was 600 yards from the beach the men decided to abandon it and swim ashore. Mr. Kinder succeeded, but Mr. Bell was soon in difficulties and was half a mile from the beach when reached by Messrs S. M. McLernon and D. A. Crooks with a lifeline. All four men were exhausted, but after resting they were little the worse for their experience.
