JNCESSANT rain, accompanied by a
south-west gale, has been experienced in Christchurch for the past 24 hours. The Rangatira arrived from Wellington three hours late, speed having to be reduced on account of heavy, seas. Special trains were run to the South and the West Coasts to carry passengers from the steamer. —P.A.

J>URSTING water pipes under Hastings shops are regarded as delayed effects of the big earthquake. In two instances recently breaks have occurred in places where there were chemists’ shops before the quake, and it is assumed that chemicals which penetrated the ground then are now eating through the water pipes.--Special.
WELL-known Gisborne resident. Thomas George Lawless, a land agent, died in hospital yesterday morning, following his admission on Friday, when he was discovered unconscious at his home, having been overcome by gas fumes. —P.A.
* • -* * tJpHE cruiser H.M.S. Achilles, now cn her way froth New Plymouth to Auckland, is carrying out speed tests. She left New Plymouth at 9 a.m. yesterday, and is due at Auckland at 11 o’clock tonight. She will steam at full speed with all hands at battle stations for an hour on the trip, and the cruiser is expected to equal or exceed her guaranteed speed of 321 knots.—SpeeiaL
