Another big entry of fat cattle was offered at Westfield fat stock sale today, arid prices held last week’s level, ranging up to 34/ per lOOlbs. for extra prime ox.
A feature, of the sale was the quantity of High class ox beef yarded. Best in this section was a line of steers from Mr G. Hastie, Papatoetoe, which made up to £ls, and averaged £1? 11s 3d. Another lot of prime and heavy steers coming from the farm of Messrs Blackett Bros., Te Kowlfhi, made an average price of £l3 10s 4d. Quality among the cows and heifers was not up to the same standard. A good entry of calves had a ready sale at late rates. The N.Z. Loan, and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report:— Beef.—Our yarding was an average one. Competition was steady, with values on a par with those ruling lc*st week. Extra choice ox sold to 34/ per lOOlbs.; choice and prime, 29/ to 33/; secondary and plain, 25/ to 28/; prime young cow and heifer beef, 27/ to 33/; secondary, 20/ to 26/; no exira heavy prime steers were yarded. Heavy prime steers ranged in price from £l2 to £l2 15/; lighter, £ll 2/6 to £ll 17/6; light, £lO to £ll/; small and unfinished, £8 to £9 15/. Extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £8 10/ to £9 15/; heavy, £7 7/6 to £8 5/; lighter, £6 to £7 5/; light, £4 to £5 17/6; others, £2 10/ to £3 15/.
Calves.—Our entry of calves was a large one. Bidding was keen, and last week’s rates were well maintained. Runners, £2 10/ to £5 17/; heavy vealers, £4 10/ to £5 1/; medium vealers, £3 16/ to £4 8/; light vealers, £3 to £3 12/; small vealers. £2 5/ to £2 18/; rough calves, £1 to £1 15/; small'calves, £1 5/ to £1 18/; fresh- dropped. 8/ to £1 1/.
