Electrical Wiremen’s Exam. Results. Included in the results of the exam-' inations conducted by the Electrical Wiremen’s Registration Board in September, are the following successful Whangarei candidates: Written part, A. H. Rolfe-Smith. Practical part, C. E. Clapham and A. H. Rolfe-Smith.

Short Sitting. ' The quarterly meeting of the Marsden Licensing Committee was held yesterday, presided over by Mr G. N. Morris, S.M. The sitting occupied under a minute. The transfer of the Whangarei* Hotel from D. G. Mclntosh to W. H. Cuthbert was approved. The chairman said that the police report on hotels for the quarter was satisfactor}'.

Metalling At Omapere. I Good progress is being made by the contractors with .the metalling of the road at Omapere and the work should be completed by Christmas and motorists will be able to use the OpcnoniOmapere Road which Will be a fine scenic route. It will also provide a shorter route to the Kauri Forest, cutting out the Waimamaku Hill. Hawke Cup Match. The Piako Cricket Association selectors have nominated B. Smith, of the T.T.T. (Putaruru) Club for selection : v : the South Auckland cricket team which is to play North Auckland in an elimination game for the Hawk" Chip. Batting well this season, his average is 73. His scores have been 51, 92, 58 not out, 20. He is a good fielder, and a fair change bowler. His was the only Piako name sent forward.

Johannesburg Stamps. Mr C. Hellier, of Morningside Road, Whangarei, has received from a South African correspondent copies of the first day covers of the stamps issued in conjunction with the opening of the Johannesburg International Philatelic Exhibition on November 2 last. The penny stamps show a full-rigged sailing vessel, of colonist days, and the half-pennies depict the head of a springbok. The covers with their coloured map of Africa, are most striking in design.

Whangarei Horticultural Society. Flower lovers are reminded of the Flower Show to be held in Commercial Cafe (upstairs) on Friday, Dec. 4. The society expects to stage the finest exhibit of gladioli, sweet peas, etc., ever seen in Whangarei. Entries close with Messrs. Yates and Co. or the secretary at 5 p.m. on Thursday. 123

A Freak Chicken. A freak chicken, one of 12. has been hatched on Mr T. Viscovitch’s farm a. Awanui. The chickens are all of a creamish colour, and the freak is as healthy as any of the others. This chicken has two legs in the normal position, but it also has two others, the third leg being between the normal legs.

Kaitaia Rain Record. Kaitaia shares with Whangarei the distinction of shattering all rainfall records for the month of November. The fall, with 13 days wet, was 8.48 inches., against an average for the month of 2.82 inches. With December still to go, the aggregate rainfall for 1936 had reached 56 inches, or two inches in excess of the annual average. December, too, opened with heavy rain yesterday.
