HOUSES FOR DAIRY FACTORY WORKERS

GOVERNMENT TO ASSIST

[Per Press Association. Copyright .] WELLINGTON, This Day.

The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, announced yesterday the Government’s intention of operating the provisions of the 1919 Housing Act, giving the Government power to advance money to co-operate with dairy factories for housing their employees. Money will be available at 3 per cent for housing workers associated with such factories, said Mr Savage. The housing will have to conform to the standards adopted by the Ministry of Housing and will have to be erected with New Zealand materials. Dairy factories will be expected to borrow the money and erect the houses, and, if they dispose of a house to an employee or employees, to insert a provision preventing trafficking at a profit. Already communications have been received from factories anxious to avail themselves of money under such a scheme, and the Government is pleased to assist farmers to do anything that will enable them to- retain the labour necessary to their industries in their localities under decent conditions, said Mr Savage. The Government is also considering to what extent moneys can be advanced to firms prepared to subscribe reasonable deposits for housing their employees. An application or two has been received already from firms willing to find small deposits and this question is being considered.
