Beleaguered Madrid
Britishers Urge Neutral Action
' IBritish Official Wireless . 3 (Received: 230 p.m.) RUGBY, .November 29. ;! pHE members of the House of Commons who went to Spain, state that Madrid is so far invested that one road only is, and has been for 21 days, open to the outside world. The improvised Government machine has its hands full, and its resources pledged in the conflict. To the 1,000,000 inhabitants has been added hundreds of thousands of refugees. The delegation after spending a week at Barcelona, Valencia and Ma • drid, sent a message to the British Government, urging neutral action to save inhabitants of Madrid. The delegation says it doubts whether the magnitude of the appalling cat tssr .;phe facing the civilian population is realised. More than a quarter of the capital has been destroyed, and is uninhabitable. The civilian casualties are heavy and starvation is at work. Also, epidemics seem to be inevitable. Concluding, the delegation urges the need of immediate largescale action by neutral Powers, working through an international organisation for. the evacuation and partial maintenance of women and children and non-combatants, is urgent to mitigate—it cannot , prevent—unspeakable horrors.
