MR SMITH’S FIRST ELEVEN
The sole selector, Mr H. E. G. Smith, has chosen the team to represent Whangarei against Rodney at Matakana on Saturday. This is the first representative fixture of the season and is beingplayed primarily with a view to gleaning a line on the material for the Northland eleven to take Tfart in the big tournament in Auckland at Christmas.
Mr Smith’s selection is:—G. L. Weir (Combined Services; captain), W, Flower, H. Masters, G. Smith ( Whangarei); D. McKay, Dunn, E. Collins (Nomads); N. Williams (Old Boys); Fyfe, Burch (Onerahi), and Cole (Albion). Morton (Nomads) is twelfth man. Lawrie (Old Boys) was not available.
Owing to rain on Saturday, no matches were played in the Whangarei competitions.
MID-WESTERN MATCHES. Playing in the Mid-Western competition on Saturday, Puwera 61 (Wallbank 16, Newton 17; Jaggard, 3 for 3, Byles 2 for 10), beat Mangapai 41 (HowiO 9, Byles 9; Peterson 4 for 10, Steedman 3 for 10). 1
Maungakaramea made 80 and dismissed Tauraroa for 27.
The points now are: —’Karamea 14, Tauraroa 11, Puwera 10, Mangapai 3.
