OTAIKA ROAD SMASH
HEAD-ON IMPACT; THREE INJURED
Otaika Road was the scene of a rather nasty motor smash shortly before 9 o’clock last evening. Fortunately, no one was serious-
ly injured. 1 The accident involved a baby car heading for Portland and a touring model on its way to Whangarei. The first-named was being driven by Mr Percy Kenyon, who had as passengers, Miss Zela Churstain, in the front seat, and Mrs A. Kidman, both of School Lane, Whangarei. Mr John Shalders, the driver, was the sole occupant of the other vehicle. Miss Ghurstain suffered cuts on the chin, and Mrs Kidman, injuries to her face. Mr Shalders received a cut hand, and Mr Kenyon, a slight abrasion- to the face. The impact occurred on the bend about 60- yards past the entrance to Mr H. W. James’ property. The baby car capsized on its left side and, as,it was a sedan, the occupants were considerably ' endangered by shattered glass. They were fortunate that the windscreen was shatterproof, otherwise they might not have escaped so lightly. Both cars were extensively damaged, particularly on their right sides. Three young men heard the crash about 200 yards away and hurried to the scene to give assistance. The victims were attended by Dr J. G. Campbell and taken home.
Mr Kenyon’s car had to be returned to town by service truck, while that of Mr Shalders was able to proceed under its own power.
