OBITUARY
MR JAMES CHING.
The death has occurred at Stoke, Nelson, of Mr James Ching, at the age of 89 years. Mr Ching was the father of Mr A. J. Ching, clerk of the court at Whangarei, and was the son of Mr Richard Ching, a member of the expedition party which founded Nelson in November 1841, under Captain Arthur Wakefield, in advance of the first immigrant shv.ps. Mr_ Ching married a Miss Doidge, who was one of the Taranaki refugees, seeking safety in Nelson during the Taranaki wars. He resided practically the whole of his life in Stoke, and he was well known throughout the whole of the Nelson province and in other parts of the Dominion. He is survived by his wife and five sons and two daughters, Mr Ching joined the Court Robin Hood, of the Foresters’ Order, at Nelson, in February, 1871, and at one time was District Chief Ranger.
