THE MAGAZINES
With Weldon’s Ladies’ Journal for October there is given away a new autumn frock with square yoke and smart sleeve, three-quarter coat with new loose back, and chic suit with triple tab fastening. The magazine portion is of a high order.
“Short Stories” for late August is a very interesting production, to which Murray Leinster. F. R. Pierce and Caddo Cameron are contributors. “Crocked Barrels” is a capital novelette of “The Major,” by L. Patrick Greene.
“The Steal of the Open D,” a complete novel by Jack Drummond, is an outstanding feature of “West” for early September. It is written by Casual Keating, and holds the attention from beginning to end. The other offerings are of the exciting order associated with the well-known “West.”
“An Introduction to the Grasses of New Zealand,” by H. H. Allan. This excellent and concise work must commend itself to every unit of our farming community, as well as to every student of nature study. In his introduction the writer points out 18 million odd acres of sown grassland in New Zealand produce something like 600,000 tons of food and clothing per annum through the medium of 80 million tons of grass—surely a sufficiently concrete argument in favour of the study of the grasses that go to make our pastures.
Although the writer’s confessed object is to provide a means of recognising the different grasses, his book goes further than this. It deals with factors apart from thpse of pure identification, and in such a way as to draw the reader from the fire-place to the open places. To this must be added the profusion and clearness of the illustrations and the low cost of the book. Dr. Allan must be complimented on giving farmers the means of a better understanding of the plants that, after all, are the backbone of- our great primary industries.—(Govt. Printer).
