Effective American Plan
CAR WITH LOUD SPEAKER
A safety education car, gaily painted and equipped with a loud speaker, has made Detroit alert to traffic laws. Its noisy instructions embarrass pedestrians into obedience. Last Christmas during the heaviest shopping season the car was placed at the busiest intersection with starfling results. Persons who had hitherto crossed against the traffic lights, even if they had to walk around the rumps of police horses to do so, stepped back on to the kerb when a policeman hailed them into the court of public ridicule. Even Santa Claus did not escape. He was just stepping, off the kerb when a giant voice came thun- ' dering through the air. “Santa Claus,” it shouted, “what will these little children think if they see you jaywalking like that?” Back to the kerb hurried Santa Claus; —The “American City ; ” • **
