CANOPUS READY FOR MAIDEN FLIGHT

The Canopus, first of the new 171ton Imperial Airways flying boats for service on Empire flying routes, will leave Rochester, Kent, today for the Mediterranean. The fleet under construction comprises 28 of these liners and'next year they will -be used for operation by the British, of .all mails for India, Australia and Africa.
The Canopus is the first commercial aircraft to have twin decks,. Her height above water is 29 feet. The remaining Jiners of this class are likely to be delivered from the works at the rate of one per month:

The air-worthiness certificate , for the new class "of Empire flying boats is reported to show that their top speed is just under 29ff nples an hour, says “The Times.” It is thus, easily the world’s fastest commercial flying boat.
The performance of the boat has greatly exceeded the figures stipulated in the contract. The fuel consumption also is much below expectations.
