PORTLAND PATIENTS’ ACCOUNTS
* “SHO ULD BE ABLE TO PAY”
“I was astounded to see the number of Portland-'men on the lists. It seems that many don’t make any effort to pay,” conmiented Mr F. Elliott, at the meeting of the Whangarei Hospital Board to-day, when a' Portland patient’s account was under review. Mr. J. G. Barclay said that Portland people should be in a better position now, as the works were on practically full time, while, until recently, they had been working broken time. The chairman, Mr. J. A. S. Mac Kay, said that working men had been put on a good footing, and were supposed to receive what would pay their way. “If they don’t,” he added smilingly, “the Government should see that they do.” He said that the board always had a number of Portland people on the books, and they. should be in a position to pay. There was no - class of man in the district under better conditions than the Portland men. In the case before the board, £ls was offered for an account of £4O. The inspector was instructed to report as to the man’s salary "and conditions, etc., to the r,ext meeting, of the board.
