The “Manchester Guardian” special correspondent in Rome interviewed a high Italian army officer who outspokenly ascribed, the Italian success in Abyssinia to Marshal Badoglio (now Duke of Addis Ababa) in' ordering the strategy after Astiba Aradam. In suddenly shooting an army corps to the right and the rear of Ras Seybum and Ras Kassa, he made the Abyssinians realise that guerilla tac-j tics would prove a trap.
The officer added: “Signor Mussolini is a mere bluffer. If the war had been left to him, the Italians would still be at Makale. The campaign had a great leader In Marshal Badoglio, and a diplomatic fool in Mussolini.
“Everyone in Italy realise the Black Shirts'- were a mass of good-for-nothings and useless in Abyssinia. The real heroes were the Alpini Regiment. The army does not love Mussolini, whose tactics are to belittle its achievement and those of Marshal Badoglio,” he said.
