Shifting- a Building,
The removal of the old Masonic Lodge building from Kitchener Street to a site close to the new Masonic Temple in Blencoe Avenue, has been undertaken by Messrs. White Bros., the well-known bridge builders. The building, after a lean-to had been detached, was drawn by means of a powerful hauling plant in a direct line across vacant sections to a point opposite Blencoe Street, the lean-to being removed afterwards. Some difficulty was experienced in anchoring the hauling plant. A heavy strainer post to which it had been secured, lifted when subjected to the great strain and the hauling plant shot forward some yards. Once this difficulty had been surmounted the building, under which heavy skids had been placed, moved slowly and safely over the first stage. On Friday everything was well in hand for the completion of the second stage of the journey. The building, which is in excellent order, will now occupy a much more convenient position and serve a useful purpose. It is to be let to Friendly Societies', who have been in the habit of using the old public library, and will be available for social purposes' or the holding of meetings as well. The contractors carried out their work with such care and skill that not the slightest damage was done to the building. „.
All that remains on the old site now are a couple of fine pohutukawa tree*, which stand out very conspicuously now the building has been removed. Any intentions of beautifying that part of the town and helping to make the future Kaitaia the “city beautiful” must have been very transitory, but what w‘as done shows how easy it is with a little effort to improve the appearance of a street. The importance of the time factor is well illustrated. The trees were planted and then left to the beneficence of. Nature. 33P
