GOLF CLUB BALL

SOCIAL EVENT AT PAPAROA. During the past few years, the Paparoa Golf Club’s annual ball has established a reputation as being one of the leading social,, events of the year in the Mid-Northern area, and this year’s function, held at Paparoa on Tuesday night, fully lived up to the standard set by its predecessors. The Garrison Hall had been transformed for the occasion into a bower of blue and White streamers, while the walls, covered in white paper, had been artistically panelled with red and gold crepe paper. The stage, with its touches of fern and other greenery, and the laying-out of a miniature golfing green, added a distinctively topical note to that end of the hall. Shaded lights and coloured bulbs fringing the stage, lent a carnival atmosphere to the function that the record crowd was quick to appreciate, and proceedings went with a swing from the Grand March to the final waltz. Visitors were present from Auckland, Whangarei and Dargayille, while the local districts and golf clubs were all well represented. The club will benefit financially by quite a respectable sum.

The committee, under the leadership of Mr T. C. Aickin, president, and Mr R. A. Whitmore, secretary, had spared no pains to make the evening a success, and if the spirit of the crowd was any criterion, their efforts had not 1 gone unrewarded. The distribution of hats, streamers and tin whistles of all descriptions added considerably to the carnival spirit predominating during the evening. The Grand March was led by Mr T. C. Aickin and Miss May Sutherland, the latter wearing Margaret Rose Georgette. The supper arrangements, in the hands of Mrs F. Jones, of Ararua, were all that could be desired, and the multiplicity of dainties provided would have tempted even the most jaded palate. Excellent music was supplied by Ces. Wright’s Dance Band.
