The POULTRY FARMER
WORKING FOR SUCCESS
(Written for the “Northern Advocate” by Geo. H. Ambler.)
CHOICE OF STOCK A GREAT FACTOR.
Many beginners think more of houses and appliances than they do of their flock. It is useless buying the latest thing in and brooders and then economising on the stock that is to provide the eggs for those machines. If it is true that the best' is the cheapest so far as your equipment goes, then it certainly must be so far as the stock is concerned. In purchasing stock the new hand should see to it that he invests only in pedigree or pure-bred stock. It is a mistake to have anything to do with or sex-linked birds. There are many advantages in having pure-bred stock. I will mention a few. Pullets that have been bred from a family noted for egg production will lay more eggs than birds produced from crosses, because for generations they and their ancestors have been herd for production along well-defin-ed lines, and what is bred in the bone must of necessity come out in the flesh.
