Mr W. Vickers has ibeen elected chairman of the Awanui Harbour Board.

The appointment of Mr A. H. Allen to act as Consul for Belgium at Dunedin, was gazetted last night. A motion of sympathy with Mr J. T. Walker in the recent loss of his wife was carried by the Whangarei County Council today. Mr Walker for a number of years was a member of the council.

Mr Richard Crooks, leading tenor of the New York ivTetropolitan Opera Co., is travelling to Australia by the Mariposa with his wife, son and daughter, and is returning to New Zealand later. Mr Crooks said the Metropolitan Opera Co. had just had the most successful season in its history, which was largely due to the broadcasting of leading artists in sponsored programmes. For 10 broadcast performances of operas the company received 150,003 dollars.

Well-known as a singer in New Zealand some years ago, Mrs R. Irvine, whose maiden name was Rose Blaney. arrived in Wellington by the Ruahine from England yesterday. “I haven’t really been in the musical world for some time in a serious way,” said Mrs Irvine. Speaking of New Zealand singers now in England, she said Mr Lance Fairfax was doing very well, and Miss Steha Murray was another New,Zealander who was still to the fore. Among the Continental artists, Richard Tauber, the German tenor, was very popular with the English public. Mrs liwine left New Zealand for England some years ago, but has been back twice since then.
