MR PETHYBRIDGE’S ESTATE.— The late Mr J. T. Pethybridge, who was co-pilot with the late Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in his last tragic flight, left an estate valued at £1549. The airman died intestate, and an application for letters of administration on behalf of his widow has been made to the Probate Court.

SEAMEN’S UNION.—The Melbourne branch of the Seamen’s Union today endorsed the motion of no-confidence in Mr J. Keenan, general secretary, carried by the Sydney branch on Wednesday.

APPEAL TURNED DOWN.—The appeal of , James Earsman, aged 67, pensioner, against the death sentence passed upon him for the murder of Mr John Hewitt, of Gilgandra, was dismissed by the Court of Criminal Appeal, Sydney. * The New South Wales Cabinet tomorrow will consider the cases of five other prisoners who had been condemned to death.

PACIFIC SHIPPING QUESTION.— The Australian Prime Minister, Mr Lyons, stated today that the negotir ations for the maintenance of British shipping in the Pacific in competition with the Matson line had reached a stage where the Governments conr cerned were considering the amount of the subsidy which would be paid. The decision, said Mr Lyons, hinged on the response which the Governments made.

BRITISH ADMIRAL DEAD.—The death has occurred of Admiral Sir Cecil . Thursby, who will be remembered by every member of the Anzac Forces whose disembarkation he covered at Gaba Tepe. Sir Cfecil was not only a fighting sailor, but also an accomplished diplomat.

RED CROSS OFFICERS RELEASED.—CoIoneI Llewellyn and Major Bentinck, British Red Cross officers, who were detained a few days ago by the Italian authorities at Diredawa, while en route to Djibouti from Addis Ababa, have now been released.

10,000 ON STRIKE.—IO,OOO building workers in Belgrade are striking for higher wages and shorter hours. Police fired on a mob of demonstrators, and one man was /killed and six wounded.

NEWCASTLE POPULATION.—The population of the Newcastle area has grown from GO.OOO in 1914 to 230,000 at the present day, due largely to new industries, the chief of which is the Broken Hill steel works.

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA.—The newspapers commenting on the draft Orders-in-Council under the Government of India Act, express satisfaction that it has been possible to fix April 1, 1937, as the date for setting up the system of provincial autonomy in eleven British Indian provinces, and for separation of Burma.

This decision has been facilitated by the Government’s adoption of the report of Sir Otto Niemeyer on the allocation of certain revenues between the Central and Provincial Governments. The draft orders will be considered by Parliament shortly after the Whitsuntide recess.

BRITISH EDUCATION BILL.— The House of Commons last evening passed the Education Bill, the voting on the third reading being 256 to 128. The Minister of Education, Mr Oliver Stanley, said he estimated that the average school-leaving age would be raised to 14 years 9 months. He assured the House that local authorities would be encouraged to provide junior schools on the basis that 100 per cent, of the children would stay at school until the age of 15. The Minister and several other speakers welcomed the settlements of religious denominational difficulties contained in the measure. The Bill will come into operation in 1939.
