OBITUARY
MRS J. T. WALKER The death occurred this morning at a private hospital, of Mrs Annie Walker, wife of Mr J. T. Walker, of Maungakaramea, at the age of 60 years. Mrs Walker was born ‘at Waikiekie, and was Miss Douglas, her father being a pioneer, who came to the colon in the early days. Prior to coming to the colony, Mr Douglas fought in the Russian War, and the Indian Mutiny. After taking part in the Maori Wars, he settled at Waikiekie, and remained there until his death. Mrs Walker was educated at Waikiekie, and, after her marriage, moved to ’Karamea where she lived for the rest of her life.
Mrs Walker took a keen interest in the life of the community and occupied at various times the positions of president of the ’Karamea branch of the Plunket Society, president of the P.W.M.U., and the W.C.T.U. She was a keen member of the Presbyterian Church and taught in the Sunday school.
Mr Walker was for many years a member of the Whangarei County Council.
Mrs Walker is survived by her husband and four daughters and one son. The daughters are:—Mrs E. D. Mead (Penrose), Mrs E. L. Goodenough (’Karamea), Miss H. Walker (’Karamea), and Mrs M. J. Mclntosh (Mangere). The son is Mr Hamilton Walker (’Karamea). The funeral will leave the late residence on Monday, after a service at 11 a.m., for the ’Karamea Cemetery.
