ORURU

METHODIST CHURCH BANQUET.

The second annual Mangonui Methodist Circuit banquet and reunion was held in Carton’s hall, Oruru, on Wednesday evening last. Unfortunately, owing to the exceptionally boisterous weather conditions many were unable to attend, but over 80 people sat down to a most sumptuous repast, including turkey and ham, trifle and fruit salad, to which ample justice was done by all. The chairman, Rev. A. J. Johnston, briefly outlined the purpose of the gathering, which was to enable people from various parts of the very scattered circuit to meet together in a social way. A toast list was as follows: —“The Christian Church,” proposed by Mr J. M. Dawson and responded to by Rev. A. J. Johnston; "The Mangonui Circuit.” Mr J. Carton—Mr A. Tracey; “The Ladies’ Guilds,” Mr J. Walton —Mesdames J. Carton and J. T. Williams; “The Bible Classes and Sunday Schools.” Mrs T. Taylor—Mr Rhys Williams; “The Banquet Committee,” Rev. A. J. Johnston —Mrs Forsyth. A recitation by Mrs Dave Archibald was greatly appreciated. Opportunity was taken during the evening to present a tea-set to the Foster family, of Oruaiti, who are shortly leaving the district, and have rendered such splendid service to the Methodist Church in this county.

Through the kind courtesy of Mr A. Carton, a short picture was screened. dealing with life in India and Africa.

The thanks of the Methodist Church are due to the energetic ladies of Oruru, who worked so hard to make the function the success it undoubtedly was, in spite of adverse weather cohditiohs.
