AMERICA’S MOST EFFECTIVE STRIKE

BUSINESS STANDS STILL IN ILLINOIS TOWN f United Press Association.-By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright .l (Received 10 a.m.) CHICAGO, February 5. The manufacturing- town of Pekin, Illinois, with 17,000 inhabitants, is undergoing what is probably the most drastic and effective strike in the history of American labour troubles. Incensed by harshness on the part of the police in breaking a picket line before a whisky distillery, the unions called all their members out, and by the middle of to-day every business establishment, except a few certified by the unions, had been closed. In most of the shops were placards stating: “Union holiday. Closed . until further notice.” The distribution of limited amounts of food, coal and medical supplies is being allowed under union supervision. Gangs of workers roamed the town ordering stores to be closed, under threats of breaking windows or other violence. The police made no effort to stop them. Several thousands of national guards are being held in readiness in other towns, but the officials appear to be reluctant to order the strike to be broken by force.
