HAPSBURG RESTORATION PROSPECT

ARCHDUKE VISITS PARIS

[United Press Association.-By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright.l (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, February 6. \ MESSAGE from Paris states that the Archduke Otto arrived there unexpectedly yesterday, accompanied by Dr. Wiesner, leader of the Austrian Monarchist movement.

The Archduke did not see Prince Starhemberg, who had gone to Vienna, The Prince, it is stated, does not wish for a meeting'. It is even reported that Otto undertook his rash journey, in direct opposition to the Prince’s wishes. Messages from Vienna indicate that Prince Starhemberg’s own activities in Paris are meeting with strong criticism in the Austrian official press.

The Vienna correspondent of “The Times" says it seems clear that the Prince has gone farther than Vienna desires at present.

Assurance Modified,

It is now reported from Paris that the Prince did not give M. Flandin assurances previously reported, but merely promised to inform the big Powers if Austria intended to restore the Hapsburgs. He added that Austria could not abandon the principles of a monarchy, but reserved her entire liberty of action in this purely internal question. Dr. Wiesner stated, on behalf of Otto. “The restoration of his Majesty to the Austrian Throne is not indefinitely postponed.” Campaign Increases.

The Vienna correspondent of “The Times” adds that, in spite of frequent official assurance, the monarchists’ campaign is increasing, and countries hostile to the Hapsburgs’ restoration feel that soon nothing will be lacking but the finishing touch. The “Reichpost,” the Austrian Government’s own newspaper, replying to anti-Hapsburg articles in the German press, says: “If Nazi Germany can be ineffably happy under the absolute rule of an Austrian (Hitler), why should it begrudge Austria similar happiness? Why should this fortunate German hinder Austria from looking for a similar, though less absolute rile.”
